Hello and welcome to Papers & Airplanes! I’m Carly Erickson and this site is an assortment of my travel writing, articles, and illustrations.
I was born and raised in the Los Angeles area. I studied English at the University of Oregon, where I also spent some time writing for the school’s journal of opinion, whose beloved mascot was an anthropomorphic mug of beer. I returned to LA for graduate school at California State University Northridge, where I kept on studying literature. During this time, I also worked as an editor of a local newspaper. I then decided to fulfill a long-held aspiration of living abroad. So, I headed to Rome, where I taught English as a foreign language and ate a lot of pizza. Now I’m back in Los Angeles again, where I teach, write, and edit.
In my free time I enjoy reading, cooking (followed by eating), taking photos, visiting breweries, and all things college football. I also travel and doodle any chance I get, usually paired with one or more of the aforementioned activities.
Thank you for visiting and enjoy!
